August 02, 2021

Recently, Tangdu Hospital of the Fourth Military Medical University implemented the world's first 3D printed titanium alloy sternum implantation for a female patient with sternal tumor. In the ward of Tangdu Hospital, the author met the patient who was recovering after operation. The patient now feels good, and she is able to eat everything she wants.

According to reports, when the patient came to the hospital, the diameter of the sternal tumor had reached 67 cm and had to be surgically removed, but the traditional sternal resection would cause a large defect in the patient's anterior chest, which would have a serious impact on respiratory function and appearance. After many consultations by the hospital treatment team, it was finally decided to remove the patient's sternal tumor and implant a 3D printed titanium alloy sternum.

Xiaoping Wang, who is a deputy chief physician of thoracic surgery of datangdu Hospital of the fourth Medical University introduced the operation process to the author. First, the patient's whole tumor and sternum were removed, and then the printed titanium alloy model was implanted. In the process of breathing, it can be raised with the chest. According to Professor Xiaoping Wang, the patient has recovered smoothly and there is no rejection in the body at present.
